Ambitious Lo Faso welcomes Fiorentina challenge

Simone Lo Faso revealed he is relishing the challenge of playing for Fiorentina in Serie A this season as he was unveiled to the media on Wednesday.

"This is an important step for me," said Lo Faso. "It’s a big move from Palermo to a massive club like Fiorentina at my age, but I’m an ambitious guy and I like challenges. That’s why I decided to buy into this project. It’s normal for there to be pressure – that’s the great thing about football.

"I would like to say a big thank you to Palermo – the [sporting] director and president Maurizio Zamparini – because they’ve done a huge amount for me over the past 11 years. I spent a lot of time there and earned a call-up to the Italy U17 squad there – and I’ve progressed to the U20s. They also made it possible for me to make my Serie A debut. I’m grateful for all that."

Lo Faso may be known as a second striker, but the 19-year-old was quick to state that he is willing to adapt to anything Stefano Pioli asks of him.

"I can play in any of the attacking positions and am happy to play wherever the coach wants me," he said. "When you play in the final third, it’s important to play with a striker that pushes in behind and frees up some space for you so it’s hard for the defence to track you. I like playing in attacking midfield and on the flanks."

Lo Faso acknowledged that competition for places will be fierce in Florence this season, but pinpointed the club’s youth policy as one of the key reasons behind him making the switch to Fiorentina.

"I’m ready physically – I feel good," he said. "I was attracted to the project here because there are so many young players at the club. If such a big club like Fiorentina is focusing on youth, there must be a reason behind that. Everyone looks ready. I hope to do well because there is a lot of competition, so I’ll need to give 100% in training to make sure I can step up.

"It’s good to feel like people have high expectations of you and that you bear some responsibility. It’s really important to train as hard as possible because you reap the rewards of that later on. There is pressure, but as I said before that’s part and parcel of football – it’s a good thing."

The forward is determined to continue developing at Fiorentina and hopes to help his new team have a successful season.

"My aim is to grow as a player, which I try to do every season," he said. "It’s important to contribute to the team every time I’m called into action. Fiorentina are always up there and that’s the objective every year. We want to do well.

"My dream was always to play in Serie A. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to do that now and I can’t wait to repay the faith the club is showing in me."

Lo Faso also provided some insight on the circumstances of his arrival in Florence.

"There were a few rumours at the start of pre-season concerning other Serie A teams and Monaco," he said. "When it got to the last day of the window, my father and agent called me and told me that Fiorentina were interested. I didn’t hesitate for an instant – I said yes right away. You don’t turn down such a prestigious club: the name means a lot."

Finally, Lo Faso revealed the advice given to him by Italy U20 coach – and former Fiorentina Primavera boss – Federico Guidi.

"He advised me to give my all because this is a demanding place, which I was aware of," he explained. "He also told me that the environment is very calm and tranquil and that the city is beautiful. Walking through the streets, you can tell that football is life here. It’s like that in the south too – we love our football. The fans are really passionate here."
