Astori calm after Roma defeat

Fiorentina captain Davide Astori called for the team to analyse their performances objectively after they were beaten 4-2 by Roma at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday afternoon.

"We’ve got three wins and two defeats from this mini run of games and that reflects the league standing we have right now," he said, speaking to the press after the final whistle. "You have to look at each match individually, but as I’ve always said it’s important that we don’t get too swept up in the negatives or positives. We need to take a step back and look at what’s going well and what’s not."

Astori stressed that the match could have finished differently had the chances gone in for the Viola against the Giallorossi.

"We equalised twice and then Federico [Chiesa] hit the post when it was 2-2, but I think in general Roma’s more astute game management was what really made the difference tonight," he admitted.

"I don’t know whether that would have killed it off but it definitely would have enabled us to manage the game differently. It’s not easy to chase a team like that for 45 minutes – it takes so much out of you. It’s tough to stay focused for the full 90 minutes against this Roma side, especially when we have such a young, new side."

The defeat leaves Fiorentina in ninth position after 12 matches, seven points off the Europa League positions.

"We’re a little way off the European spots," conceded Astori. "Time will tell whether we’re able to get there or not."
