Astori "proud" after Inter draw

A point may have been no less than Fiorentina deserved, but Davide Astori spoke of his pride in his Viola team-mates after they battled back from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw with Inter on Friday night.

"It was a great game," began the Fiorentina captain, speaking after the game. "We wanted to win but we also wanted to produce a convincing performance and that was there from the first minute to the last. We did well to stand firm after they scored from their first shot on goal – we kept going right until the end so that’s a positive. We need to improve in attack because although we were able to shake off their pressure, our final ball and finishing wasn’t good enough."

Astori shrugged off suggestions Inter had set out to play a defensive game, arguing it was Fiorentina’s performance itself that kept Luciano Spalletti’s side pinned back in their own half for the majority of the 90 minutes.

"I’m proud of Fiorentina, not disappointed with Inter," he said. "We would have made it hard for anyone tonight. Our attitude was really positive, we never stopped running and we gave all of their players a hard time. We didn’t give them any time or space so I think the way the game went reflects well on Fiorentina not badly on Inter."

The defender also praised the way the team has turned their season around after a tricky start back in August.

"I never count the first game of the season because we had no chance of doing well," he said. "We needed time but of course this is a club where they expect results straight way. We’ve done amazingly to stay focused and keep believing in our work and that’s paying off now."
