Marco Benassi declared himself delighted with Fiorentina’s first three points of the season, which came after a scintillating 5-0 win over Hellas Verona at the Stadio Bentegodi on Sunday afternoon.

"We’re very happy with the result and most of all with the performance," said Benassi after the final whistle. "We were coming off the back of two games in which we’d not been able to get the result, so it was vital to get the three points today and we’re delighted that we have done.

"We’ve learned from the first two games. We went 2-0 down quickly against both Inter and Sampdoria, so obviously we didn’t start well. We wanted to change that today and we did."

Benassi revealed that the Viola were desperate to get their first points on the board against Verona following a tough start to the season.

"We were very determined today because it wasn’t good enough for a team like Fiorentina to be on zero points after two games," he said. "We wanted to win at all costs and it’s even better that it came through a top performance.

"We’ll enjoy this result tonight but as of tomorrow we start working again because we can still improve. We want to be ready for Saturday and get another good result."

The 23-year-old Italian, who played a key role in Fiorentina’s win at the Bentegodi, also spoke about his own form at his new club.

"The more I train with my team-mates and the more I get to grips with the coach’s instructions, the better I feel," he explained. "I’m getting better with every game and I hope to maintain that. I’m using my attributes to perform to my best in that position and the coach is helping me to improve every day. It came good today."

Benassi was full of praise for his fellow new signings, most notably Cyril Thereau, who scored from the spot to make it 2-0 against Hellas.

"The more time we have together, the better we’ll get to know each other and the better we’ll play," he said. "Thereau is a great player and he’s got going right away. He played well today and made a big contribution."

Last but certainly not least, Benassi paid tribute to the Fiorentina fans for their support so far.

"The fans have been amazing," he said. "They really cheered us on against Sampdoria and even after we lost they applauded us. They showed that they’re always by our side."
