Biraghi: "We deserved more than a draw"

There was no hiding the disappointment for Cristiano Biraghi after Fiorentina were held to a 1-1 draw by AC Milan on Saturday, despite dominating much of the game against Gennaro Gattuso’s side.

"We deserved more than a draw," said the defender, speaking after the final whistle. "We were the ones taking the game to them – we decided when to attack and when to take a breather. We imposed our own tempo on the match and dominated them, so we’re a bit disappointed because it’s a game we could have won comfortably."

Biraghi was philosophical on the decision to spare Alessio Romagnoli a red card for his tackle on Giovanni Simeone in the first half.

"The referee made his decision," he said. "I think everyone agrees that it was a red card. The referee made his decision and – right or wrong – it needs to be respected because it’s up to him. We made our point but then we focused on the match again. The footage is clear – it’s not up to me to say whether it was the right call or not."

The Italian also shrugged off suggestions that Fiorentina are struggling in front of goal, pointing to the quality of the defenders in AC Milan colours at the Franchi.

"We scored today – we can’t always score two or three," he said. "Regardless of the difficulties AC Milan have been having, they’re still a good side with defenders that play at international level. We got a goal but we were a bit naïve in the way we conceded today. AC Milan hadn’t created anything and if we had been a bit more focused we could have easily avoided that goal."
