Fiorentina’s 90th birthday celebrations are set to continue on Saturday 13 May as the protagonists of the 2002/03 season – the first since the club went bankrupt – return to the Stadio Artemio Franchi for the Viola’s Serie A clash with Lazio.

The event has been organised in collaboration with the Museo Fiorentina to honour those who helped the club come back to life as Florentia Viola, starting in Serie C2 in August 2002. The playing squad will be joined by the coaching staff and management team, all of whom helped to put together a team worthy of representing Florence and continuing the city’s long footballing traditions.

Shortly before kick-off against Lazio, the group will take to the Stadio Artemio Franchi pitch – their home that season as they surged to the Serie C2 title. It was a memorable campaign for many reasons, not least the 30 goals scored by Christian Riganò (a high for any professional league in Italy), the 789 minutes that goalkeeper Andrea Ivan went without conceding, the 11 wins and 38 points the team picked up on the road, a defence that conceded just 20 goals in 34 games and the side’s eight-game winning streak. Yet the best was still to come, as at the end of the season the Della Valle family reacquired the rights to the Fiorentina name and colours.
