Fiorentina captain Gonzalo Rodriguez has called for his team-mates to give everything they have over what he considers a "crucial month" for the Viola’s season.

The Argentine defender was speaking ahead of Thursday’s return of the Europa League, which sees Fiorentina travel to Germany to face Borussia Monchengladbach.

"We’re fully focused on the Europe League – the Udinese win is in the past," said Rodriguez. "We know it’s going to be a tough game, especially away from home, but we need to believe in ourselves. We want to win the match or at least get an away goal."

"It’s an important competition, a trophy that every player dreams of winning. We need to take it game by game and focus on Thursday’s match against a very tough, physical side. We have to produce a proper Fiorentina performance."

Rodriguez also spoke of his satisfaction with the way Fiorentina responded to the defeat by Roma with a convincing 3-0 win over Udinese on Saturday.

"We were disappointed with the Roma result because it was a poor performance and we had to look at ourselves," said the Viola captain. "We know that that wasn’t us. You saw the real us against Udinese – it finished 3-0 but it was a tough game against a good side. We showed character, showed that we’re still fighting, and now we want to perform well over the coming month."

The Argentine admitted that some of the criticism levied at Fiorentina following the Roma result was over the top, but insisted that it hadn’t affected the players.

"Nobody likes getting criticised, but you can’t write a team off on the back of one game," said Rodriguez. "We didn’t get ahead of ourselves when we beat Juve so we’re not going to start thinking we’re rubbish after one defeat. We know we played poorly and need to improve. There’s an important month ahead, both in Serie A and the Europa League, and we want to do well for ourselves and for the fans."
