Montella takes positives after Bologna stalemate

Vincenzo Montella was keen to highlight the positives after Fiorentina were held to a 0-0 draw by Bologna in his first match back in charge of the club.

“I was impressed by our spirit and desire to keep things tight,” said Montella, speaking in his post-match press conference. “We were up against a team that has picked up 12 points in five games – I think that’s more than Juventus – and a team brimming with confidence, enthusiasm and desire to get a result, while you all know what we’ve been through in recent times. When you weigh up all that, I have to say that the lads produced a great performance.”

Montella stressed that the Viola dominated the game in terms of shots and chances, while admitting that his side must be more clinical in front of goal.

“We had a lot more shots than our opponents and although I don’t care about possession at all at the moment, we had more of the ball than them and created more chances,” he said. “They didn’t cause us any problems apart from a couple of counter-attacks at the end, when we lost our positioning a bit because we were pushing hard for the win – but that’s the will to win I want to see, so that was pleasing.

“Of course, we can be a bit more direct and attack the area better when we get a cross in. We had lots of crosses today – I counted at least four or five where the ball was there to be won and it’s those chances where we need to improve in order to break the deadlock.”

Montella also rejected suggestions that his team is suffering from fear out on the pitch, but acknowledged that it hasn’t been an easy spell for his young team.

“I wouldn’t call it fear,” he said. “You get the feeling that the team is afraid of taking risks, but that’s inevitable given that things haven’t been going well recently and the fact that we have young players here. That said, I think the team did try to force things in the second half. We showed belief.”
