Montella: “This team is determined to respond”

Vincenzo Montella has revealed that his Fiorentina side are eager to produce a reaction on the pitch as he prepares to lead them into his first game back at the club against Bologna on Sunday.

“There’s a good group here with a good work ethic,” said Montella, speaking at his pre-match press conference on Saturday. “Credit to Stefano Pioli and his team because they’re in good shape physically. They’re lacking a bit of confidence because of recent results – I think it’s just one win in 11 at home, seven defeats…

“It’s a very young team that’s having to deal with these results, but they’re very motivated and willing. They are determined to respond. The last two training sessions have been very intense and they’ve shown desire and hunger.”

Montella confirmed that he will not be making sweeping changes to the team and style ahead of the visit of Bologna to the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

“All coaches have their own footballing ideas, working methods and ways of preparing for games,” he said. “We’re all right and we’re all wrong – there’s no one right way. I’ll change a few things but I won’t turn everything upside down. I don’t expect to completely change the way the players operate but I’ll make a few tweaks because of the recent form and results.”

The new Viola boss insisted he is fully focused on the Bologna match – despite the Coppa Italia semi-final second leg against Atalanta looming on the horizon.

“I’ve been focusing solely on this game, which is an important one because we need points,” he said. “Regardless of what people might think, there are 21 points to play for so the unthinkable could happen. We need to prepare for this game and then we’ll focus on other matches.”

There was also warm praise for Federico Chiesa, a player the Viola faithful will be hoping can inspire the team to kick off Montella’s second spell in charge with a win on Sunday.

“Federico is a complete player,” said the boss. “He’s a modern player – he can do it all. I think he’s played his best football on the wing, starting from a deep position, but he’s also been very clinical in front of goal. He can do everything so I hope he plays to the height of his potential. We’ll get him in a position to express himself but he’s a player you can always rely on in every respect, including his mentality. He’s a decisive player.”
