Montella: "We must regain our composure"

Vincenzo Montella called for his Fiorentina side to regain their composure after they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Parma on Sunday afternoon, leaving the Viola needing a result on the final day to avoid relegation.

“We’re not scoring but we’re creating lots of chances, some of them clear-cut,” said Montella, speaking in his post-match press conference. “Sometimes it’s just the final decision that we get wrong. The only explanation I can find is the lack of calm around the team, but we need to overcome that too.”

A win over Genoa on the final day will be enough for Fiorentina to stay up, with Empoli needing to beat Inter at San Siro to have any chance of avoiding relegation.

“Our destiny is still very much in our hands, so we need to trust ourselves,” he said. “Nothing is going our way at the moment and I think we’re being influenced by other factors, but that’s the way it is. We need to face up to these challenges. That’s the life of a coach – you go through positive times and negative times. This is a very difficult time and I see it as a test and an opportunity for me to grow.”

Montella also stressed the importance of going into the match against Genoa with no fear.

“It’s important we don’t go into the match with fear,” he said. “The only way I know to do that is to go into the game with our heads up and with determination to pull through this situation. We have one game left but our future – our destiny – is in our hands. While that’s the case, we have the obligation to give everything we have and make sure there is no fear there. I don’t think we were afraid today because we played very well. We lacked a bit of composure in the final third and we must improve on that.”
