Montella: "We’re playing for ourselves and for the fans"

Vincenzo Montella has made it clear that Fiorentina will be giving everything they have when rivals Juventus come to the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Saturday afternoon.

“There’s a historic rivalry there,” said Montella, speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday. “They’re a great side and are always on top form. But I think that impossible games make for great stories, so we need to show all our energy, belief and technical ability to taste a feeling like that.”

Could we see Franck Ribery from the start against Juventus?

“Ribery is fit and firing. I'm not sure if he's got 90 minutes in him yet but he's trained well this week. He showed he was in good shape against Perugia – he stayed on for longer than we were expecting. He's keen to play – he’s a great player – and as long as nothing untoward happens he will play.”

Just how big a challenge is this match?

“In the last eight years, Juve have only last eight or nine per cent of their games. They’ve drawn 19% and won about 70 or 75% of their matches. They’re a great side and are always on top form. But I think that impossible games make for great stories, so we need to show all our energy, belief and technical ability to taste a feeling like that and start writing our story.”

How is your state of mind going into the game?

“I’m motivated and confident. I want to work and finally I’m able to with the full squad. Today is the first day because Pedro hadn’t even trained with the group yet, so I feel excited. We want to start to write our story tomorrow, get off the mark in terms of points and start showing some consistency in our performances.”

Is this a special match for you as well as for Florence?

“You're always fully motivated for Juve because they’re the best team of the last ten years and because there’s a historic rivalry there. We're playing for ourselves and for the fans.”

Fiorentina haven’t won at home since December 2018. Does that worry you and does that increase the pressure?

“Coaches are based on the job they do – that’s normal and I accept that. Having said that, please let me do my job! I’ve not been able to work with the full squad yet, so I’m as calm as I can be.”

How is Martin Caceres?

“He had only had a couple of training sessions and hadn’t trained with the team, so I thought he was a little behind. But then he went and played two 90-minute games with his national team. He trained with us for part of the session yesterday for the first time since coming back from international duty and I have to decide whether to go on what I see in training or what he did in the games. He can play in any position, so he’s a really valuable, versatile player.”
