No excuses from Pioli after Hellas defeat

Stefano Pioli made no efforts to mask an unacceptable Fiorentina performance after the Viola’s 4-1 defeat by Hellas Verona at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday.

"We did too many things badly and were soundly beaten," said Pioli, speaking in his post-match press conference. "The spirit that we usually have wasn’t there. It’s a defeat that hurts – it’s hard to take. We need to produce a big reaction quickly."

The Viola coach dismissed suggestions his team are lacking fitness, pointing to a lack of focus and application as the main reason behind the result.

"I don’t think it was a physical issue today – it was about our attitude," he said. "Our concentration levels weren’t high enough and we didn’t show enough determination. We gave them easy goals. The match went from bad to worse."

Pioli went on to set out the way forward for the side after a hugely disappointing defeat.

"I’m more disappointed with the performance than anyone," he said. "It would be easy for me to say sorry to the fans but I don’t think that would solve anything. Our performance wasn’t acceptable today. We need to hold onto the work we’ve done and the results we’ve achieved. Today’s result is a big blow because it seems like we’ve thrown all the work we’ve done over the past six months out of the window, but that’s not the case. I can understand the disappointment and anger but we – myself, the team and the club – need to be even more focused on our work now. That’s the only way we can get back to being the team we were before."
