German Pezzella called for Fiorentina to finish the season on a high after they lost 1-0 to Cagliari at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday afternoon.

The result means the Viola must beat AC Milan next weekend and hope Atalanta lose to have any hope of qualifying for the Europa League next season, but the Fiorentina defender was quick to take the positives from what has been a truly unique campaign in Florence.

"At the start of the season, I don’t think many people thought we’d be in the position we’re in going into the last day of the season," he said. "It’s not easy to do the kind of things we’re doing when you bring in so many new players. When you get yourself into this kind of position, you want to win – we wanted to get the win today and we want to win on the last day. We don’t want to fail now after everything we’ve done."

Pezzella made no excuses for the defeat to Cagliari, admitting that Fiorentina simply failed to perform on the day.

"It was a massive game for both teams but we lacked clear heads from the very start," he said. "We weren’t able to move the ball around quickly and we struggled to get into the final third to try and hurt them. We wanted to win the game but we just couldn’t get it done."

The Argentine also thanked the fans for their support this season.

"I want to say thanks to the fans because they’ve shown us great support, especially in those tough times when we needed help to keep going," he said. "They provided that and we won’t forget that. All experience helps you to grow. It was hard to keep going after what happened but you start to think about all kinds of things – you look at things in a new light, off the pitch too. I’ve grown this season as a player and a person, but it’s not over yet and I want to end on a high in the last game."

Davide Astori’s family was in attendance at the Franchi and paid the squad a visit after the final whistle, with Pezzella admitting that the emotion is still raw for everyone connected with the tragedy.

"Davide’s brother is just like him – he speaks just like him too," "It was hard when I saw him come into the dressing room. They’ve stood with us. His partner was at the training ground yesterday to see us. It’s difficult but we’re sticking together. We need to give each other the strength to carry on."
