German Pezzella admitted that Fiorentina’s 1-0 win over Benevento on Sunday was the most difficult of his entire career but called for his team-mates to learn from Davide Astori’s example and try to enjoy every match between now and the end of the season.

"It was a difficult game to play – the hardest one of my career and I’m sure that goes for the whole group," said the defender after the full-time whistle. "It’s tough even to speak after what happened, but if Davide were here I’m sure he’d want us to keep going and continue everything he did for this group."

Pezzella also had warm words for the fans, who paid tribute to Astori in spinetingling scenes at the Franchi ahead of kick-off.

"It’s hard to put it into words," he said. "The silence… it was indescribable. All I can say is thank you. It’s been a difficult week but we’ve felt their support every day. It gives us another reason to carry on."

The Argentine went on to call for Fiorentina to help each other through to the end of the season.

"We want to go into training and see our team-mates happy again," he said. "It’s tough right now. We have lots of young players in the team so the older players need to be strong. It’s important to enjoy every session. Davide was the kind of person that loved every game, every training session. That’s one of the main things he’s left us and something we’ll try to build on day by day."
