Pioli: "Fiorentina were wasteful"

Stefano Pioli admitted that his side were not clinical enough in front of goal as they were held to a 0-0 draw by SPAL at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday.

"The only thing we were lacking was a goal," said the Viola boss in his post-match press conference. "We made ten great chances, which shows that we created the opportunities. The final ball was there, but we were lacking the finish. It wasn’t our day in front of goal.

"SPAL had to defend more today than they have done in any of their last six or seven games. We kept going, dug in and gritted our teeth. We played well and created a lot of chances, but obviously if you don’t stick it away you don’t win football matches."

Pioli refused to blame the result on misfortune, stressing instead that it is his players’ responsibility to finish the chances they create.

"Bad luck doesn’t exist in my eyes," he said. "We lacked precision, which means we were wasteful. We had some excellent chances – not half chances but proper openings. It wasn’t bad luck. Last week we did really well to score twice from three shots, but today we didn’t hit that level and we lacked precision."

Despite the dropped points, the Fiorentina coach praised his team’s performance and called for the players to focus on their remaining games.

"We’re really pleased with the performance and we go home with our heads held high," he said. "Clearly we wanted to get the win, for ourselves and especially for our fans because they’re helping us so much. We still have several games remaining and the next match particularly is very important."

The Viola face Lazio next time out in what could be a decisive match in the race for European football – and Pioli admitted that facing the Biancocelesti represents a big challenge for his side.

"I’m never relaxed going into games, but Lazio in particular struck us as being a really good side when we faced them earlier in the season – better even that Juventus, Napoli and Roma," he said. "They’re a side that deserves respect and a certain amount of fear, but I think we’ve come on a lot and can have our say."
