Pioli hails Fiorentina character after comeback

Stefano Pioli has urged his Fiorentina side to use their stunning comeback at Sassuolo as a springboard for their upcoming games.

The Viola found themselves 2-0 down at Mapei Stadium on Sunday, but eventually rallied to snatch a 3-3 draw courtesy of a last-gasp Kevin Mirallas goal.

"I was expecting a tough, hard-fought game against a team that plays good football," began Pioli, speaking in his post-match press conference. "We were too timid until they went 2-0 up – we didn’t try to work any moves that could have made us more dangerous. Our play was too simple. It was only when we didn’t have anything to lose, if you like, that we showed our character and took risks the way we hadn’t been doing previously. We need to learn from that for the future.

"That said, the reaction in terms of character showed that the team did not want to give up and that we did not want to lose again – we need to keep working on that and build on it."

Pioli admitted that his team’s struggles to break their winless run are affecting the players’ performances.

"I think it’s pretty clear that the fact that we’ve not won for over two months – almost three months – is something that can weigh on the players’ minds," he said. "We’d put a lot into preparing for the Juventus match at home but it went the way it went. We need to grow as a team and in order to get back to winning ways we need to be more consistent and cause our opponents more trouble."
