Pioli hails Fiorentina reaction in Bologna win

Stefano Pioli praised his team after they bounced back from last weekend’s galling defeat to Hellas Verona with a 2-1 victory away at Bologna on Sunday.

"It’s been a strange week, but I’ve never had any doubts about the team’s willingness to take responsibility and keep believing," said Pioli, speaking in his post-match press conference at the Stadio Dall’Ara. "We got it wrong – no doubt about it – but we knew that. We were expecting a tough match today and it would have been anyway because Bologna are a good side. Our performance was spot on: we were tough, powerful, focused and determined and the result proves that."

Despite the win, Pioli shrugged off suggestions the result could be a turning point for his team, preferring instead to focus on the bigger picture.

"I don’t like talking about turning points," he said. "Every match in a season is important. We have two clear objectives this season. One is to build a solid base so that the club and coach can then kick on next year and fight to return to Europe. The second is for us to try to have a better second half of the season than our first half. That one won’t be easy, because the points are much harder to pick up for everyone in the second half of the season."

Looking ahead to Friday’s visit of champions Juventus to the Stadio Artemio Franchi, Pioli accepted that the home support will be key to his team’s chances of getting a result.

"I have no doubt that Florence will be right behind us," he said. "We are a good side and we’ve produced big performances against other strong teams. We were in the game for the whole 90 minutes earlier in the season, so we need to focus on that."
