Pioli: "Napoli point shows Fiorentina progress"

Stefano Pioli was full of plaudits for his Fiorentina side after they held Napoli to a 0-0 draw at the Stadio San Paolo on Sunday afternoon.

"We were more threatening in the first half than we were in the second, but that wasn’t a lack of desire," he said, speaking after the game. "Having to chase Napoli took it out of us and we were unable to break so much in the second half. We dug in and tried to be dangerous when we could after the break."

Pioli singled out Cyril Thereau as having embodied his team’s battling attitude in Naples.

"Football is about working for the team, especially when you’re up against a top side like Napoli," he said. "The great players do that and we do too. Thereau did a great job today – the fact he was working so hard defensively meant he couldn’t offer so much going forward, but he was always involved in our counter-attacks. He could and should have gone for goal more in the first half, because we got ourselves into their area, but everyone was happy to work hard for the team today. You have to do that if you want to play at the top."

The Fiorentina coach pointed to Sunday’s result as further evidence of how far the Viola have come this season.

"[Milan] Badelj was the only played in the team tonight who started here back in May, which shows how much has changed," he said. "There were lots of new faces on the bench too. We were always going to need some time to get to know each other and find the balance we have now. We have our own way of playing and we’re showing we can compete with anyone in the league."
