Stefano Pioli has spoken of the importance of the Coppa Italia ahead of Wednesday’s quarter-final tie against Roma at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

“Tomorrow is an important match because the Coppa Italia is an important competition,” said Pioli, who was appearing at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday. “You come in at the Round of 16 stage and if you play well in four games you can be in the final. That said, we’re up against a very good side and we’ll need to produce a big performance. It’s a very important match in this competition.”

Pioli is confident his team will be able to deal with the win-or-bust nature of the occasion on Wednesday.

“It was the same against Torino – we knew there was only one result possible and that it could go beyond the 90 minutes with extra time,” he said. “We know how to approach these one-off games – we know we need to be on it for the full 95 minutes. We need to ensure we’re ready and play as a team from start to finish.”

The Viola boss was keen to stress that Wednesday’s game won’t be the defining game in Fiorentina’s season, highlighting the importance of Serie A to his side.

“There’s still a long way to go and the game tomorrow won’t decide our season,” he said. “We have an objective in the league and if you look at the table it looks tough. There are lots of teams fighting to get back into Europe or do better than the first half of the season, but at the same time the chances are there. We want to try and stay in the mix until the end of the season and then go for it.”

Pioli also confirmed that Sunday’s raucous 4-3 win at Chievo Verona has given his team a confidence boost ahead of Wednesday.

“It shows that you can achieve big things if you show quality and desire,” he said. “It also gives us belief in our ability because it was a strange game – it seemed done and dusted but it wasn’t, and then we did very well to get the win with ten men. These wins definitely boost the belief and confidence of my players.”
