Pioli rues lack of finishing touch in Genoa draw

Stefano Pioli was left frustrated after Fiorentina were held to a 0-0 draw against Genoa on Sunday, despite his side subjecting the visitors to a sustained – yet ultimately fruitless – second-half onslaught at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

"We weren’t able to play with a high enough tempo for the full 90 minutes – it was only in the second half that we achieved that," said Pioli after the match. "They made it hard for us in the first half but there was plenty of scope for us to overcome their press – we didn’t move the ball quick enough and lacked precision.

"We had 22 shots and looked dangerous from every set play so we were only really lacking the extra edge that allows you to get the opening goal. It was a tough match, as we were expecting. They worked really hard, packed the defence and made sure there wasn’t much space. We needed an individual move or set play to come off, but it just didn’t quite happen."

Pioli also defended his tactical decisions during the game.

"I think [Valentin] Eysseric looked good when he came on," he said. "I went with him over [Riccardo] Saponara because Saponara played his first game in a long time three days ago and I wasn’t sure how well he’d recovered. Obviously when you make a sub you’re looking for improvement and your expectations are high, but I expect a lot from the starting eleven too.

"We struggled up front today because our build-up play from the back was slower than usual. It meant that the strikers had less space and couldn’t find that final move. We played 70 balls into their box and created seven clear chances so that shows we created enough, but we were lacking the precision, clear-headedness and luck you need to break the deadlock in these games."
