Pioli rues mistakes as Fiorentina go down at Atalanta

Stefano Pioli admitted that defensive errors cost his Viola side as they were beaten 3-1 by Atalanta in Bergamo on Sunday night.

“I think we did well in the first half but we can’t allow ourselves to make the kind of mistakes we did for the goals we conceded,” said Pioli, speaking in his post-match press conference. “We had our chances – we had the chance to make it 2-0 and we had a chance through Laurini to go 2-1 up – but we conceded two goals when we needed more focus. We’re conceding too many goals so we need to work hard on that.

“I think they won more attacking duels. We created moments of danger for their defence too but they had more chances and were able to take three of the six or seven they created.”

Pioli brushed off suggestions that the Coppa Italia is now Fiorentina’s only realistic chance of qualifying for next season’s Europa League.

“We’re focused on giving everything we have,” he said. “We know we’ll need 60 points to get into the Europa League. We have 13 games left and we would need 24 points, so we need to push hard, but we have a lot of head to heads left to play. On Sunday we have a very difficult game against a Lazio side that are back in form. Sampdoria and Atalanta are there too, plus we play Torino at home in a few weeks. We’ll have our chances.”

The Viola boss admitted it was disappointing to leave Bergamo empty-handed, but stressed his belief that Fiorentina can still achieve their goals in the league this season.

“We wanted to get something out of today but it’s our first defeat of 2019 – we need to analyse it well and understand that we need to improve on a few things,” he said. “That said, we still have a lot to give and I still believe we have the ability to climb the table. Obviously, to do that we need to beat our direct rivals, especially at home against Lazio and Torino, if we want to overtake the teams above us. There are lots of direct clashes and our rivals will take points off each other too, so although we’re five points behind now, we can still do it – the Coppa Italia semi-final is not our last chance.”
