Pioli: "We did everything we could to win"

Stefano Pioli cut a disappointed figure after Fiorentina were held to a 1-1 draw by Cagliari at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday evening.

Fiorentina had the lion’s share of the chances to win the game, but Pioli admitted the Viola only had themselves to blame after relinquishing the lead given to them by Jordan Veretout’s penalty.

"The margin between winning and drawing is so fine," said Pioli, speaking after the game. "I think we had a lot more chances than them in the second half, but our error was to concede a goal in a way that could and should have been avoided."

Pioli insisted that he had seem some positives from the game, but his disappointment at the Pavoletti equaliser was clear.

"The team played well in the first half," he said. "I think the only error we made was that we weren’t direct enough, especially with our full backs – we needed to try to break the lines and attack the space more. Cagliari worked very hard and put us under pressure, but we stayed focused, kept clear heads and showed the kind of personality that I think will help us to improve.

"We did everything we could to win the game in the second half and we just came up short in one instance. It’s a shame because it was a mistake for us to let Joao Pedro set off from that part of the pitch when we had extra men. We’ve not been able to get the win but we did everything we could to secure the three points."
