Pioli: "We paid for our mistakes today"

Stefano Pioli admitted Fiorentina were the masters of their own downfall at Crotone as two mistakes in as many first-half minutes condemned them to a 2-1 defeat at the Stadio Ezio Scida on Sunday afternoon.

"We didn’t start the game well and we made two bad mistakes in the space of two minutes, which made it difficult for us," he said. "There was plenty of time and we definitely showed desire and worked hard, but we weren’t as clear-headed or clinical as we could have been. We knew that they are a very physical, direct side and that there were going to be lots of battles and second balls to win, but they got there first time after time.

"We didn’t play the way we’d planned to. We’ve lost a game that would have given us the consistency and league standing we’ve been looking for. If we continue working hard I think we’ll have more opportunities, but unfortunately we’ve missed a chance today."

Pioli made no efforts to mask his dissatisfaction after a frustrating day on the road.

"I’m disappointed and I know my players are too because we didn’t do ourselves justice today," he said. "This was a really important match but we weren’t able to capitalise and we need to get to the bottom of why that was."

The Viola coach dismissed suggestions that he had made mistakes when selecting the starting line-up, insisting that the two changes made at half time were merely a reaction to the events of the first 45 minutes.

"I took the decisions based on what I’d seen over the past few days and the team’s desire to continue this run of form," he said. "I made the changes because we didn’t do certain things well in the first half and I was hoping to improve the team. It wasn’t our day and when that’s the case we struggle."

Despite the disappointment, Pioli pointed to his team’s recent form as a positive to hold on to moving forward.

"What’s encouraging is the performances we produced leading up to this game," he said. "They show that we’re good enough to play expansive football and secure positive results. We know that when we don’t keep it tight, stay aware, maintain a high intensity and keep a clear head, we risk losing games. We weren’t clear-headed, compact or alert today and we’ve paid for that. The fact we conceded those two goals like that shows that something didn’t work today."
