Fiorentina's new Brazilian defender Vitor Hugo says he's ready for life in Serie A and hopes to be a success – with the help of Stefano Pioli and team-mates like Davide Astori.

The 26-year-old was speaking at his media unveiling in Moena, where he was introduced by Giancarlo Antognoni.

“Vitor is a strong central defender with excellent technical ability and he's good with both feet,” the Fiorentina club manager began.

“He's strong in the air at both ends of the pitch and he's scored lots of goals.

“He made his name in Brazil when he joined Palmeiras in 2015 and went on to help them win the league.”

The man himself then fielded questions from the gathered journalists.

Do you think you might have difficulty adapting to life in Serie A?

“I'm really happy to be here. I know Italian football is very tactical and intense but I think people like Astori can help me to adapt and to be a success here. I believe I've performed well in the past and I want to keep improving and obtain the results the fans deserve.”

Do you know any players who have played in Serie A before?

“I'm a big fan of Miranda of Inter and Felipe Melo too. And I've always loved Carlos Dunga's style of football.”

What's your first impression of Stefano Pioli?

“I think he's a very good coach who knows how to deal with players. He jokes with us at times but knows when he has to be firmer. I think I can work well with him and learn from him.”

Did you speak to anyone before coming to Fiorentina?

“I played with Felipe Melo at Palmeiras and told me very good things about Florence and Fiorentina.”

Have you and your team-mates spoken about your targets for the coming season?

“We're haven't spoken about specific targets but I think we all want to win. Personally, I'm here to obtain results and be successful.”

Do you hope to earn a Brazil call-up?

“Everyone dreams of playing for their national dream but it's not something I obsess about. First of all, you have to do well for your club – any international call-up comes as a result of that.”

Have you started developing an understanding with any of your fellow defenders?

“Not so much on the pitch because we've only been working together for a week, and less with the internationals, but off the pitch I've struck up a friendship with [Abdou] Diakhate and Bruno Gaspar. They seem like a great bunch of lads so I think I'll get on fine with everyone.”
