Vitor Hugo: "Winning was all that mattered"

It was a case of mission accomplished for Vitor Hugo and Fiorentina on Sunday after the Brazilian helped the Viola to a vital 1-0 win over Chievo Verona at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

"The coach made it clear that we had to do everything we could to win today – it didn’t matter whether it was pretty or not," said the defender. "The most important thing was to win. It was tough going right until the end, especially with the wind, but thankfully we did well and emerged with the three points.

"I’m delighted to have played because I was desperate to. We worked really hard despite the bad weather and thankfully we’ve won an important game. I’ve never seen anything like it – this is the first time I’ve started a game here at the Franchi and I get conditions like that! It was really difficult to play the ball."

Hugo – who was making his first league start at the Franchi – insisted that he is getting better and better at Fiorentina.

"I’m learning a lot every day, in every training session," he said. "I try to take all the advice on board, I observe and try to understand what’s being asked of me. I think I’ve improved but I can still get better and do more to help Fiorentina."

The Brazilian was playing in a back three with Davide Astori and German Pezzella, but stressed that he is happy to play anywhere Stefano Pioli wishes.

"I just like playing – it doesn’t matter where," he said. "They’ve really helped me this week in training and they were talking and encouraging me constantly throughout the game today. It helps me to improve. I’m pleased with my performance and I hope to get more playing time in the future. The coach is very smart and knows what he’s doing – I have real confidence in him."
