Fiorentina Women’s FC beat Orobica Bergamo 2-0 away on Saturday to go top of Serie A with one game left to play.

The Viola took the lead on 41 minutes after Lana Clelland pounced on a loose ball before firing home for 1-0, with Valery Vigilucci adding the second on 71 minutes after a neat exchange of passes with Michela Catena.

“We had two objectives in this game,” said coach Antonio Cincotta after the match. “We wanted to secure the result and conserve our energy as much as possible, given our many injury concerns. That’s the reason I rotated the team so much, although everything went to plan. We kept the tempo quite low, focusing solely on our objectives, and we got the job done.”

Lana Clelland shared her satisfaction after returning to goalscoring form following her injury lay-off.

“I feel good – the most important thing was to get the three points,” she said. “I’m happy to be back playing. I didn’t expect to score but I was ready in case the chance arose. I’m not back at 100% yet – I need minutes to get back to where I was before, but I’m working hard for that. Next week is going to be very demanding so we need to take it one match at a time. Let’s focus on the Coppa Italia first, then turn our attentions to the Serie A title race.”
