Fiorentina secure Champions League berth with Roma win

Fiorentina Women’s FC beat Roma 2-1 in their final league game of the season on Saturday to secure a place in next year’s Champions League. Results elsewhere meant the title went to Juventus, with the Viola finishing one point behind in second place.

Ilaria Mauro gave Fiorentina the lead on 30 minutes, before Pugnali levelled the scores for the visitors two minutes before half time. The Viola were not to be denied, however, and Valery Vigilucci stepped up to convert a last-minute penalty to ensure there would be Champions League in Florence again next season.

“We fully deserved this win,” said Antonio Cincotta after the game. “The team attacked for the whole game against a strong, expansive side in Roma – it’s not easy to play against them. In the space of three days, we’ve made it into the Coppa Italia final and qualified for the Champions League, despite being low on energy and bodies. We’re competing on all fronts and have done a wonderful job this season, so credit to the players and the club. We’ll do our best in Parma – we won’t be in peak condition but we’ll battle hard and do the club proud. We’ve done very well so far and the Coppa Italia would be the cherry on the cake.”

Alia Guagni also spoke to the media after the game.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game,” she said. “We were a bit low on energy but we wanted to win at all costs – we deserve this. It’s a huge achievement to qualify for the Champions League, even though it’s often taken for granted. We’ve dropped a few too many points in the league, which is a shame, but we’ll try again next year. It’s been a very competitive season in Serie A – every weekend has been a war. Now we focus on the Coppa Italia – we’ll need to show great concentration and roll up our sleeves to bring home the cup.”
