Fiorentina Women’s FC got their 2018 off to the best possible start with a 4-0 win over Res Roma at the Stadio Tre Fontane in Rome on Sunday.

Tatiana Bonetti opened the scoring on nine minutes, while Elena Linari added a second from the penalty spot on 35 minutes. Bonetti made it 3-0 to the Viola a minute into first-half stoppage time, while Ingrid Maria Spord completed the scoring on 72 minutes.

After the match, coach Sauro Fattori expressed his satisfaction with the result.

"I’m delighted with the girls," he said. "We had a lot of players out and suffering with illness, some of them coming down with it just this morning, but we played really well. We worked hard and I’m pleased – it was vital that we started the year well."

Two-goal Tatiano Bonetti insisted that Fiorentina can still play their part this season despite finding themselves some way off the pace currently.

"We’re still here – we want to compete again and show how good we are," she said. "I don’t think our form so far this season is indicative of the team we have here. We need to pick up some points and the way to do that is not by talking but by performing on the pitch, as we did today."

Bonetti also stressed the importance of all members of the Viola squad after she rediscovered her scoring form in Rome.

"I’m happy. I enjoyed it and it was a great game," she said. "I found the net again which is always good for a striker. I want to keep this up and do my bit for the team. We need everyone at the moment so I’ll try to give 100% at all times."
