Fiorentina miss out on Super Cup

Fiorentina Women’s FC missed out on the chance to bring some more silverware back to Florence on Sunday as they lost 2-0 to Juventus in the Italian Super Cup final in Cesena.

Cristiana Girelli gave Juventus a 1-0 lead on 11 minutes, stroking home with her right foot from close range, with Andrea Staskova adding a second in the third minute of second-half stoppage time to wrap up the win for the Bianconeri.

“The problem is that in order to play you need to attack, and for that you need strikers that are fit,” said coach Antonio Cincotta after the final whistle. “We had a different kind of attack in the first half, without Mauro or De Vanna, but then in the second half the subs gave us more physical strength. These games make you reflect. You need to have the right level of fitness, which we don't have.”

“We're disappointed that we didn't start the game as strongly as we did in the second half,” said Alia Guagni. “We gave them too many chances and conceded an absurd goal. We should have started the game with a high press, because every time we do that we cause teams problems. No celebrations today - I'll save them for the league.”
