Fiorentina Women’s FC have one foot in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia after they beat Hellas Verona Women 6-0 at the Stadio Olivieri in the first leg of their quarter-final tie on Wednesday.

A penalty gave the Viola the chance the lead on 27 minutes, as Tatiana Bonetti dispatched the rebound after seeing her initial spot kick saved. Bonetti added a second eight minutes later – this time making no mistake from the spot – before Lana Clelland made it 3-0 to Fiorentina with a fine curling effort on 43 minutes.

Clelland notched her second and Fiorentina’s fourth with a smart finish in the 64th minute, before an own goal made it 5-0 to the visitors on 75 minutes. Valery Vigilucci completed the scoring with a tap-in in the third minute of added time.

“We’re pleased with the result because the team showed experience, but I’m not happy with the first 20 minutes because it took us too long to get into the game,” said coach Antonio Cincotta after the game. “That was down to our opponents – credit to them for keeping us out. After that, we managed to counter better and found the pace and tempo we needed to break through their defence and get the goals. We also had to deal with five players being ruled out at the last minute, but Fusini, Ripamonti and Corazzi came into the fray and made sure we didn’t notice the absentees. Congratulations to them from me and my coaching staff.”
