Fiorentina Women sweep past Sassuolo for seventh straight win

Fiorentina Women’s FC made it seven consecutive wins in all competitions with a 4-1 victory over Sassuolo CF on Saturday.

Tatiana Bonetti fired the Viola into an early lead on 9 minutes, heading home after an Alia Guagni cross, before Valery Vigilucci made it 2-0 from the spot on 33 minutes. Ilaria Mauro added a third eight minutes before half time, guiding the ball into an empty net after the Sassuolo goalkeeper had misjudged a cross.

Sassuolo pulled one back just before half time, but Guagni struck just before the hour mark to restore Fiorentina’s three-goal lead and secure the points for the home side.

“The girls played very well today,” said coach Antonio Cincotta after the game. “There was no one stand-out player today – we did well as a collective. Sassuolo were a tough opponent with a lot of motivation because they wanted to bounce back from their recent defeats.

“It’s a shame we conceded from the corner – we need to be more alert and raise the bar. That can’t happen again. We’ll work on those little things – me first of all.

“As I’ve already said, it’s a three-horse race for the title. We’re on a long unbeaten run but we need to keep looking to the future. We’ve not achieved anything yet so we must keep training – we won’t stop until the second leg against Verona.”

Valery Vigilucci also spoke of the importance of keeping the pressure on at the top of the table.

“We’ve won today and Juventus have drawn, then next week Juventus and AC Milan face off,” she said. “We could take advantage there but first of all we need to win. We have to win every game from now until the end of the season.”
