Fiorentina Women’s FC hit six at Atalanta

There was an emphatic win for Fiorentina Women’s FC on Saturday as they thrashed Atalanta Mozzanica 6-0 away to keep pace at the top of the Serie A table.

Ilaria Mauro fired the Viola a 2-0 half-time lead, before adding a third on 46 minutes to complete her personal hat-trick. Alia Guagni bagged a second-half brace either side of a strike from Scottish striker Lana Clelland to complete the scoring for Fiorentina.

“We were wary of Atalanta and we had a lot of respect for them because they’ve had a great winter transfer window, signing lots of top players including our own [Patrizia] Caccamo,” said coach Antonio Cincotta after the game. “We know that was going to give them a boost in terms of their quality and technical strength, which spurred us on to prepare carefully. We played well and our build-up play was spectacular. I’m pleased for the girls and the fans here. We’re up there – there are three teams separated by a few points so we’ll fight for the title until the end.”

Hat-trick hero Ilaria Mauro also spoke to the media.

“I’m happy to get a hat-trick, but the most satisfying thing is the performance from the team today,” she said. “It wasn’t a given that we were going to win this game, especially looking at the state of the pitch here. Atalanta had held AC Milan and Juventus, but we’ve beaten them comfortably twice. That can give us a boost. We have a demanding week coming up and we’ll need even more focus and desire because the AC Milan match could give us a great league standing.”
