Fiorentina Women’s FC secure second straight Coppa Italia crown

Fiorentina Women’s FC were crowned Coppa Italia winners for the second successive season on Saturday after they brushed Brescia aside with a 3-1 victory in the final.

The Viola roared out of the blocks, scoring three times in the first 45 minutes as Ilaria Mauro, Tatiana Bonetti and Patrizia Caccamo fired Fiorentina to within a whisker of the cup. Brescia pulled one back in the second half, but there was to be no denying the Viola the cup.

"We knew we were in great form and we’ve shown that today," said coach Sauro Fattori after the game. "We’ve been working towards this result all season. We’ve worked really hard and did really well to keep chipping away to achieve something amazing for us and for all of Florence. I’m delighted because this team and this club really deserve this, despite everything. We stuck together even in the tough times – we just focused on working hard and concentrating on our objectives. This is our reward."

Fattori also praised the team for the way they recovered from a poor start to the campaign.

"I’m really disappointed that we couldn’t fight for the league title but that’s football," he said. "We had some issues at the start and it was tough for us to come back. That said, we found our motivation and the team stepped up. This is a great side."

Fellow coach Antonio Cincotta was similarly glowing in his praise of the team, dedicating the win to the Fiorentina fans and the late Davide Astori.

"It’s amazing because we’ve won this cup after months of issues," he said. "We would like to dedicate the cup win to Davide Astori. It’s nothing really but it’s the only thing we have so we want to dedicate it to him. We’re proud that we were able to kick on and show what we’re about. Above all, we’re delighted to win a bit of silverware for our wonderful fans. I absolutely love Florence, I love the fans, and winning something for them is something I can’t put into words."
