4th spot, UEFA Cup semi-final and Viola Fair: 2007/2008


Fiorentina affirmed their style both on and off the pitch. In an exciting ending to the season the Viola reached 4th spot and the right to play in the Champions League’s qualifying rounds. The decisive goal came in Turin 15 minutes from the end of the season with an overhead kick by Osvaldo. It was the year of big achievements, turning the game around to win 3-2 in Turin against Juventus, and the year of big European games, with the Viola making it to the semi-final of the UEFA Cup after producing great displays in Spain (against Villarreal), Greece (against AEK Athens), Norway (against Rosenborg) and Holland (against Groningen and PSV). The adventure ended with an undeserved defeat on penalties in the semi-final to Glasgow Rangers, who then lost the final to Zenit St. Petersburg.
But above all it was the year in which Fiorentina affirmed their style, as the first team to applaud their opponents off the pitch. It happened after Inter had defeated the Viola on December 2nd, and from January the League imposed the custom as obligatory. It was also the year of the Viola fans: fair, enthusiastic, and ‘rewarded’ by the ‘Viola Fair’ initiative by the critics and the stadium stewards. On the pitch, recognition came all over Europe and Italy both for the team’s play and discipline (coach Prandelli was once again awarded the Panchina d’Oro), and even UEFA President Michel Platini had words of praise for the good conduct of both club and fans.
