No excuses from Pioli after Cagliari defeat

Stefano Pioli admitted that Fiorentina did not to deserve to win on Sunday as they were beaten 1-0 by Cagliari at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

"We didn’t play well," said Pioli after the game. "Lately we’ve been playing well and winning games, but that wasn’t possible today. We started pretty well, but we ran into lots of difficulty. The reaction was there in terms of our desire, but we lacked clear heads and precision.

"In falling behind our task was made harder, but there was time for us to turn it around. This wasn’t our greatest day, unfortunately."

The result leaves Fiorentina relying on other results if they are to snatch a Europa League place.

"The only thing we could affect was this game," said the coach. "The team looked great in the week – we’d prepared well, as we always do, but I think we came into it overly fired up and we weren’t able to deal with the pressure of the game. Clearly, we didn’t show the quality we have in recent games."
