Federico Guidi’s Fiorentina Primavera side are into the U19 Championship semi-finals after a 1-0 win over Atalanta on Sunday.

Slovenian forward Jan Mlakar scored the only goal of the game in the 45th minute, slotting home Riccardo Sottil’s whipped cross to give the Viola what proved to be an unassailable lead.

Fiorentina will now face Juventus in the semi-finals on Wednesday night.

"It was a tough match, as we were expecting," said Guidi after the final whistle. "We played excellently in the first half – we dominated possession and were able to manage the game, as we have done for large parts of the season. I have to say a massive well done to the lads because they implemented our playing philosophy today. That wasn’t easy against a very good Atalanta side.

"The team looked very solid in the second half. That was the plan because we knew that Atalanta had many quick, technically gifted players who could cause us problems if we gave them time and space. We wanted to lock down the space to prevent them getting any one on ones – that’s something that we struggled with against both Roma and Inter. Given who we were playing today, this is definitely one of the best performances of the season."

Guidi insisted he has no doubts that his team will be fully recovered for the semi-final against Juventus.

"It was a demanding game, not just physically but mentally too," he said. "Let’s not forget that this is the culmination of a long journey of sacrifice for these players. Many of them will leave the youth academy and try to establish themselves in the senior game after these finals. They have high expectations of themselves. We need to recover now because we have a very difficult match ahead.

"We know that Juventus are a great side. They have some very good players and play great football – they dominated their group. That said, we’re in the semi-finals so you expect the standard to be high. I’m sure that the lads’ motivation will be right and they’ll put their heart and soul into it for all 90 minutes against Juventus."
