Primavera: Fiorentina fight back to draw 1-1 with Chievo

Fiorentina Primavera were held to a 1-1 draw by Chievo Verona on Sunday, with the result extending the Viola’s unbeaten run to three games and leaving Emiliano Bigica’s side seventh on eight points for the season.

Chievo – who were bottom of the table with zero points going into the game – took the lead on 21 minutes after Elian Demirovic converted from the penalty spot to make it 1-0. Fiorentina the chance to strike back immediately after Alessandro Lovisa was fouled in the Chievo box, but Tofol Montiel saw his spot-kick kept out by the post. The Viola didn’t have long to wait, however, as Lovisa showed good poise to control the ball and fire home for 1-1 on 33 minutes to complete the scoring.

“I’ll take the draw because in previous years we’ve lost games like this,” said Bigica after the full-time whistle. “It was a positive performance because the lads kept their heads and never lost their nerve during the game. Our intensity was very high. Perhaps we allowed Chievo a bit too much space at the start of the second half but after that we began pushing again and showed good focus. We were just lacking that end product.”

Bigica refused to criticise his players despite being held by a team that had failed to pick up any points before Sunday’s game.

“Chievo were on zero points going into this game but the table definitely doesn’t tell the whole story and I told the lads that,” he said. “The players approached the game as if it were a final and that’s what I asked of them, so credit to them. I’ll take the point. It keeps our run going and now it’s about recovering our energy as quickly as possible for Wednesday’s game against Pescara, which will be another difficult match.”

Bigica also dismissed suggestions that his side could already be thinking ahead to next Monday’s Italian Super Cup final against Atalanta.

“No, we need to focus on Pescara and Pescara alone,” he said. “I’m not interested in Atalanta. We’ll speak about that further down the line. We need to get back to winning ways against Pescara because that will put us in a more befitting position in the league. We need to recover as quickly as possible because it will be very tough on Wednesday.”
