Primavera: Fiorentina held to 2-2 draw by Sampdoria

Fiorentina Primavera had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Sampdoria on Saturday, with Samuele Spalluto scoring late on to secure a point for the Viola after two second-half goals from Doria had left Fiorentina staring down the barrel of defeat.

Tofol Montiel fired the Viola into a 1-0 lead from the penalty spot with just two minutes on the clock after the referee had spotted a handball in the Samp box, but the home side were unable to build on their advantage despite a number of opportunities as the first half wore on.

Sampdoria had a penalty of their own early in the second half after a clumsy challenge in the box, with Felice D’Amico making no mistake from the spot to level the scores at 1-1. And D’Amico came back to haunt the Viola just before the 70-minute mark as his shot took a wicked deflection in the box and found its way into the net for 2-1.

Defeat would have been harsh on Fiorentina, but thankfully that fate was to be avoided as Spalluto found himself in the right place at the right time to head home for 2-2 with the minutes ticking away.

“We’re pleased from one perspective because we played the way we’d planned to in the first half,” said Alessandro Unghero, standing in for the suspended Emiliano Bigica. “We probably deserved to end the first half with a two-goal lead. Sadly they were able to equalise due to a mistake from us and then a deflection gave them the lead. The lads did well to keep believing, keep playing good football and get the equaliser. We want to take the positives even though we think we deserved more than a point.”
