Primavera: Heartbreak for Fiorentina as Atalanta win Super Cup

Fiorentina Primavera missed out on the Italian Super Cup after a 2-1 defeat to Atalanta in Bergamo on Monday night.

Robert Piccolo headed Atalanta into the lead on 54 minutes after an evenly matched first half, but the Viola hit straight back as Bobby Duncan equalised from the penalty spot two minutes later.

Yet Fiorentina again found themselves behind on 62 minutes after Emmanuel Gyabuaa stroked home following a rapid Atalanta break. Alessandro Lovisa had a fine chance to equalise for Fiorentina on 74 minutes, but could only fire over after a deft header back from Duncan at the far post.

“I was proud to see the bravery and personality my players showed,” said coach Emiliano Bigica after the game. “They showed me a positive response because we struggled with Atalanta’s possession game and they way they kept switching the play in the first half. We did well in the second half, found the passes and showed a good level of intensity.”
